ANDY & DEBB

Andy & Debb met in New York City while attending design school at Pratt Institute. They were colleagues, friends, lovers and finally husband and wife. After graduating in 1994, they worked in NYC for a bit, and got married in 1996. They had always dreamed of creating their own collection in Korea. They made this dream a reality in 1999, and launched Andy & Debb in Seoul, Korea. The collection was an almost “instant hit”-with editors and trendsetters. Their signature clean, fresh and modern cuts while using luxurious fabrics were known for New York City chic. Andy & Debb was soon to be a leading designer collection in Korea.

After opening their first flagship store in Shin-Sa Dong, Seoul in 1999, Andy & Debb gradually expanded their boutiques in major department stores in Korea, such as Galleria, Shinsegae and Hyundai. They have since opened several other stores in Korea as well as run and operate their own production.

Since Andy & Debb went to Art & Design school, they are very much driven by 'Art'. They visit museums and galleries very often and are inspired directly from recognizable artist's work. For example, in F/W 2003, it was Marc Rothko. They took blocks of colors from his work and developed it to the next level with use geometric seams on each garment.

For S/S collection in 2005, they collaborated with young sculptor Gwon, Osang and developed accessories for the show. He made lightweight pieces compared to his regular style. He normally makes life size sculpture covered with small square cuts of a picture of certain object or person. In other words he would make an object with pictures of that object, cut it into small pieces and makes a collage on top. For this collection, he made flower corsages and bags that were used for the show. Models carried bags and artwork that was made to look like them. It was sensational in Korea not only because Osang Gwon was a famous artist but also because it was a new way to approach art meeting fashion. Here is his work at www.osang.net, as well as his current exhibition at www.asiatriennialmanchester.com .

For their FW08 collection they worked with Miro Kim who develops collages from various method of printmaking. Her drawing is known for its sensitive quality of lines. She drew the peacock with wavy feathers that were silkprinted on fabric to make dresses and skirts.

Their first New York City runway show was for SS09 during fashion week in September.
