CAROLINA HERRERA: The Middle East is an Inspiration
“From my observations, Saudi women are a lot like Latin Americans; they love makeup and colors,” said the Venezuelan fashion designer, Carolina Herrera, after her visit to Jeddah to support breast cancer awareness with Zahra Breast Cancer Association.
Herrera and her daughter Carolina Adriana held a press conference in Jeddah last October to announce that a charity dinner event would be held at the Park Hyatt Jeddah under the patronage of Princess Haifa Bint Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz, chairman of Zahra Breast Cancer Association. Guests were invited to contribute to the cause and entered into a draw to win an item from the Carolina Herrera New York boutique.
“I believe Saudi women are very elegant. Their abayas are very beautiful and they have flawless skin, beautiful eyes and incredible hair. I saw Princess Haifa Al-Faisal and her sister Princess Ola and they were stunning and they looked very elegant and chic,” she said. “In every summer collection, you get to see beautiful, colorful kaftans that women wear at the beach, from Yves Saint Laurent and other designers, and I believe it’s an easy wear and elegant. This would definitely be an inspirational source especially after my visit to Jeddah and Dubai,” she added.

J. Mendel Bridal: Timeless Elegance + Red-Carpet Glamour
Bridal week is long over, but that didn’t stop Gilles Mendel from showing his Fall 2012 J.Mendel Bridal Collection to buyers this week. He used his signature hand pleating, ruching and draping on the ethereal designs that, Mendel said, are “a combination of timeless elegance mixed with a hint of red-carpet glamour.” With base fabrics of silk chiffon, silk faille and satin, each look featured couture detailing and unique silhouettes reminiscent of his ready-to-wear. Standouts included a hand-embroidered silk chiffon bias-cut gown in pale gray with ruffled shoulder detail, as well as a stunning strapless ivory look with a sweetheart neckline and hand pleating from top to bottom.

Maybelline New York Reports on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week's DKNY and Custo Barcelona shows...
Maybelline New York is the official makeup sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and is here to report on the DKNY and Custo Barcelona shows:
“With a very poppy New Yorkesque backdrop DKNY announced the theme before the lights even went on; the show was colorful and so very New York. Beautiful summery colors, comfy khakis that every girl will dream of to run in Soho, a trench coat for those April showers, little flowered dresses and a silk square scarf around the neck of every model walking down the runway: a perfect wardrobe for a girl in the Big Apple. The makeup was as fresh and flowery as the collection itself with just a little “je ne sais quoi” on the eyes in the shape of a silver metallic dot paired with a fresh looking lip. Looking forward to the spring days with Donna Karan!”
“As always Dalmau Custo delivered what made Custo Barcelona a sensation. The collection felt like taking a trip to Ibiza with bohemian psychedelic prints, fushia caftans and boho patchwork denim, fringed bathing suits, funky sneakers, sequins tops and colorful suits for gentlemen. With pumping music the girls and boys of Custo seemed to display a free spirit reminiscent of the 1970’s. Their look was accessorized with a sun drenched makeup just like if they had spend the day lounging at the pool. Ola Mr Custo!”

Guest Blog: Nigel Barker on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
For over a decade, I’ve attended Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week here in New York. Although I’ll never forget the iconic tents of Bryant Park, this season’s historic move to Lincoln Center gave me much to look forward to.
On the eve of the event, ANTM premiered its most fashionable season yet, Cycle 15, which set the tone for the week: High fashion, top models, and high-fashion philanthropy! This MBFW season, I teamed up with Nine West for their initiative, “Runway Relief.” From go-sees and fittings to runways and after-parties, an army of ‘role’ models will wear Modelinia boots affixed with pedometers counting every step they take. For each mile these models strut, Nine West will donate $10 to the CDFA’s charity, Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. (Good thing the venue is 30 percent larger!) You can even get in on the action and sponsor your favorite model at Modelinia.com.
Now for my MBFW lineup! I began Friday night at Lord & Taylor for Fashion’s Night Out, photographing customers and signing copies of my new book, ‘Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation.’ Saturday started with Cynthia Rowley then Jill Stuart. Cynthia’s collection was quirky and cool, and she also showcased her new line of designer Band-Aids! The Jill Stuart collection was a stand out as usual, feminine, sexy and effortless. Still ahead, I’ll be attending Tory Burch, Rosa Cha & Pamella Roland. I am lucky enough to shoot the Pamella Roland Ad campaigns, so I have a special affinity with that collection.
This particular season of MBFW is special to me because I am launching my book, “Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation,” and the book’s websites, Beauty Equation and BE One, on Monday, September 13th, at 7:30PM, at Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Triangle. The book aims to erase the idea that to be beautiful, you need to be a retouched model. Rather, I hope to empower the reader to believe that their own individuality is what sets them apart, and that the lives we live make us special.

Backstage Beauty: Maybelline New York Reports on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Maybelline New York is the official makeup sponsor of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and is here to report on the Vivienne Tam and Z Spoke by Zac Posen shows:
“For her new collection, Vivienne Tam told us the story of a girl who, through thick and thin, traveled the silk road. The chic bohemian desert look was paired with a sun-kissed face thanks to generous dabs of Pure Mineral Bronzer.”
“For his big return to the tents, Zac Posen went full throttle. Vibrant, colorful prints, day dresses that every girl would have fun in, all topped off by sky high shoes. Three extremely bold and vivacious makeup looks complimented the ZSpoke collection. Zac's magic touch: a thumping soundtrack by the amazing Misshapes!”

Backstage Beauty: TRESemmé Reports Braids Hit the Catwalk
The red carpet love affair with braids continues on the runway inside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Nicholas K included a soft fishtail braid coming down the side, while Lela Rose infused the bigger is better theme with a large, messy side braid for models. Bensoni gave pigtails a regal upgrade with cascading braided coils. The TRESemmé Stylist Team added a few small braids in the front of the hair for Charlotte Ronson's show. A photo of Kate Moss inspired Charlotte for the look. Stylists applied TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray to braids and flat ironed to smooth fly-aways.

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff
Guest Blog: Stephanie Winston Wolkoff on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
In November 2010, Stephanie Winson Wolkoff became the founding director of Fashion at Lincoln Center, and is overseeing the relocation of New York City’s biannual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. In addition, she supervises every aspect of all Lincoln Center-based Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week events, and is coordinating an ambitious year-round schedule of fashion-related programming at Lincoln Center.
There are those in our complicated, consuming, colorful industry, who were born knowing they belonged in Fashion. There are so many of those people—hundreds probably—and their drive is our trade’s metaphoric fashion fuel.
I was never one of those people. As someone who found herself at home on shiny basketball courts, not lacquered runways, Fashion was miles from my athletically-oriented upbringing.
And so my most memorable Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week experience, and certainly, my first one, doesn’t involve sepia-toned sartorially-tinged childhood moments that indicated my destiny at Vogue and now, at Lincoln Center, or crafty adolescent seamstress-ing experiments. (Although, I will concede old photographs document what some might call a prodigy’s eye for balancing proportion.) It was only later in my life, and well into my career, that I even began to feel comfortable and then revel in the palpable hum of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Through the seasons, I’ve been fortunate to see breathtaking work, and bear witness to shows that leave their own unique indelible sketch. But no vintage Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week memory can out-do the thrill of September 9th, 2010, day one of this season’s events at Lincoln Center. Yes, as a child, my wildest dreams weren’t built from production schedules or invitations or contracts—least of all presiding over them! But that’s because my imagination then couldn’t conceive of a creative world this vast and my place in it. So walking—fine, maybe strutting

Backstage Beauty: Bigger is Better Inside Lincoln Center
Go big or go home is an unofficial theme of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, and the hairstyles have taken note. Designer Fiona Cibani of Ports 1961 chose big curls and body to compliment her collection of gorgeous silk and heat-treated dresses. The key to lift is to prep hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, like TRESemmé Naturals Radiant Volume Shampoo and Naturals Radiant Volume Conditioner. Flip head upside down when blow drying, and use fingers as a brush to create texture. Big hair has already made it off the runway as women request voluminous looks by our stylists at the TRESemmé Salon & Lounge inside Lincoln Center. Come by between 9AM and 6PM for a complimentary styling and a bottle of TRESemmé Fresh Start No-Frizz Crème.

Backstage Beauty: Maybelline New York Reports on the BCBGMaxAzria and Michael Angel Shows...
“With its renowned flowy, billowy silhouette, the BCBGMaxAzria collection mixed ethereal shades of beige, rose, white and black with overlay of lace and tulle making us wish it was next summer already! The look was soft and natural with each dress walking down the runway looking more comfortable than the other. Eyes were highlighted with white gold shadow for a very statuesque look while the lips delivered an innocent fresh flush of color.”
“For Spring-Summer 2011, Michael Angel displayed a new twist of his talent with colorful beading, latex inserts and the multicolored psychedelic prints that made him a name to remember. The evolution couldn't be missed, more androgynous and more confident the Angel woman is ready to take the world. Each piece was accessorized with simple black or cream Derby shoes for a masculine take, while the makeup was simple and clean, effortless with just a dab of shine on the lips.”

Backstage Beauty: Hair Goes Up, Up and Away for Spring 2011
The energy inside Lincoln Center is electric, as the spirit of "something old, something new" takes over. Up-dos are getting a serious upgrade, as designers put their own spin on the classic style. Christian Siriano included a voluminous bun at the crown with his chic pieces and tulle gowns, while designer Farah Angsana went for a low bun with a sexy side part for her show. Great style is still all about making things your own, as Richie Rich proved with the high tucks featured in his show, closed by an unforgettable runway walk by Ellen DeGeneres. TRESemmé© TRES Two Extra Hold Hair Spray will keep your unique up-do looking fabulous all day.

Guest Blog: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Model Mayham by Samantha Gradoville
For me, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is considered to be the most stressful month of the year, but it can also be the most rewarding. Everyone from designers, to stylists, and casting directors too, begin preparing months in advance, as do the models. For me, I start going to the gym more frequently and watching what I eat. I have been vegetarian for almost three years, so eating healthy is quite easy. I just have to make sure I stay away from my favorite dessert, nutella-banana crepes! Once I arrive in New York, I always go on a little shopping trip and buy a new pair of heels. I end up searching every store in the city looking for the perfect one. After the search ended, “the one” ended up being a pair of Versace boots, which I love! My friends and I will also go shopping for some new clothes or handbags. It is always easier to have the opinion of someone you trust. Since the castings have begun, I am mentally preparing myself for the stress and exhaustion to come. Shows are starting on the 9th this year, and I’m ready! Wish me luck!

American Express Skybox Moment: Christian Siriano
Suffice to say, most Project Runway alums have either found moderate success or disappeared altogether after their 15 minutes of fame. One clearly defying that trend is Christian Siriano, who continues to churn out awe-inspiring fantasy frocks for daring women everywhere. And if his show on September 9 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was any indication, his designs have also matured to include wearable, office-appropriate feminine blouses, structured jackets and full trousers.
American Express Cardmembers watched Siriano’s floaty runway creations from their chic enclave in the Bill Sofield-designed Skybox, where moments earlier actors Alan Cumming and Kristina Bowden quickly popped into the space for a pre-show visit. Shortly after the last model hit the catwalk and the spectacle concluded, Siriano himself paid a visit to the Skybox, exhaling a sigh of relief as he thanked Cardmembers for catching his show. Celebrity stylist and Skybox host Kate Nobelius conducted a fun and informative interview with Siriano, where he divulged that his Spring 2011 collection was inspired initially from the “print inside of an old Chinese temple” he had seen while traveling. The creative juices flowed and the collection grew into an “international” collection that had Afro, Mediterranean and Greek influences sprinkled throughout.
“My buyers have been supportive and amazing,” he pointed out. “I’m carried at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus doors and some specialty stores.” Sounds like a lot of flash, but deep down Siriano likes to keep it real and makes effort to create designs for a wide range of fashionable customers. He proudly cited his seventh collection collaboration with Payless as a great opportunity for his designs to reach a new chic audience. “I want to help create a world where everyone can shop.”
The statement clearly resonated with the intimate group, as an excited Cardmember shot up out of her chair asking if she could be photographed with him while wearing her Siriano-designed shoes to her first fashion week experience. He laughed, posed for pictures and later proclaimed to all, “Now, all I want is some pizza!”

TRESemmé Hair Trend of the Day
The mix and match of textures seen on the runway has also made its way to hair. Designers like Richard Chai created stunning looks with the perfect mix of volume and straight. To achieve this look blow dry hair and spritz TRESemmé Smooth & Silky Shine Spray onto a brush before brushing through the front of your hair. This will give you instant shine and will calm any flyaways. Spray the back of hair with TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray to prevent damage and add soft waves with a 1" curling iron.

Ralph Lauren to be Honored at Emery Awards
Ralph Lauren Corp. and Macy’s Inc. will be honored alongside Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, N.J., at the 25th annual Emery Awards tonight, in a gala at Cipriani Wall Street that benefits the Hetrick-Martin Institute.
Charles Fagan, executive vice president and chief of staff to Ralph Lauren, will receive the award for his work spearheading that company’s efforts to assist HMI, which hosts programs supporting gay and lesbian young people and is also home to the Harvey Milk School. Chief merchandising officer Jeff Gennette will accept the award for Macy’s...
...Ralph Lauren employees decorated the Harvey Milk School prom, a custom that has continued for the past six years. The company has also sponsored HMI’s School’s Out fund-raiser in East Hampton since 2008 and the Fall Fest fund-raiser in upstate New York since 2009.
More recently, both Ralph Lauren and Macy’s employees volunteered to paint parts of the HMI and Harvey Milk School facilities this year. Ralph Lauren communications and graphics teams have conducted an extensive rebranding effort for HMI over the past year, with a new logo, tag line and marketing materials that will be unveiled at the event tonight.
In the 2008-2009 school year, students from HMI programs participated in Ralph Lauren’s ongoing Polo Fashion School program, which allowed a group of teens to work extensively over a two-semester period with Ralph Lauren designers, merchandisers and retail executives to create four evening gowns and a tote bag, the latter of which was sold in select Ralph Lauren stores and online.
Other groups that have participated in Polo Fashion School include students from East Harlem School at Exodus House in 2004, Team Revolution in 2005 and 2006 and Harlem Children’s Zone in 2007...

Two kissing crocodiles: a designer collaboration resulting in the Lacoste + Malandrino capsule collection...
Two well known Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week designers are collaborating: Catherine Malandrino has signed on for four seasons with the brand Lacoste. When asked about the Lacoste + Malandrino capsule collection, Malandrino said, “As a French woman, I was very honored when they first approached me. Lacoste was so much a part of my childhood, too. It is still the epitome of class and joie de vivre that is linked to Lacoste.”
Bringing her sexy flare to the brand’s masculine roots, Malandrino is up for the challenge of reinventing the brand to be more inticing to women. The first step was to pick the label for the collection, which will be two kissing crocodiles. Catherine Malandrino is the first designer to ever collaborate with Lacoste. She adds, “We can bring that vocabulary of emotion, desire and seduction to the brand. I am very excited, too, to get into this world of active clothing. As a woman, as a mother and as an active woman, I can bring fashion and fun to everyday life.”

Hot new duo: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week esteemed designer Richard Chai has partnered with Original Penguin...
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week esteemed designer Richard Chai has partnered with Original Penguin to launch a co-branded menswear line for spring/summer and fall 2011 collections and will be debuting at Chai’s show at Lincoln Center under the name Richard Chai for Original Penguin.
“I thought Penguin was a really interesting brand with a lot of heritage, which is important to me,” Chai told WWD. “It’s iconic with a lot of history — all these Hollywood people in the Fifties and Sixties wore it, like Bob Hope and the Rat Pack and Clint Eastwood — but there’s also something witty and anti-establishment to the brand, which I think works with my sensibility.”
The spring collection will boast nine men’s short- and long-sleeve polos and cardigans, in various colors and fabrics, retailing for about $110.
The fall 2011 line is expected to produce a full collection of potentially 30 different outerwear, pants, sweaters, polos and shirts pieces. Both collections will be available worldwide in Original Penguin stores.
“We think working with Richard elevates the brand in an aspirational way,” said Ann Payne, senior vice president of merchandising and design at Original Penguin, which is owned by Perry Ellis International, according to WWD.
“Especially in this environment, you always want to be able to evolve the brand and keep it interesting and attract new customers. This is a way that we can channel a feeling of sophistication into the brand.”
Nicholas K's first ever solo runway show will also be the first ever fashion show to be presented at Lincoln Center...
Nicholas K came to life in 2003 as a result of a brother/sister collaboration from designer Nicholas Kunz and business partner Christopher Kunz. The brand, which includes women’s and men’s looks, is pure, understated and ingenious. When asked about her inspirations, Nicholas herself answered, “My color palettes are usually inspired by nature, and clothing styles usually come from my city life, thus the collection tends to have a very organic, avant-garde feeling.”
If you’re not familiar, it’s time to get familiar. In 2009, the line was inducted in the CFDA. Nicholas K can be found at Saks Fifth Avenue, Atrium, Blue & Cream, and various boutiques around NYC.

Fashionistas, wear your highest heels, with the new upgrades you can forgo the long lines this season at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week...
As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week moves to Lincoln center, a more environmentally friendly invitation process will be put into action. Instead of receiving paper invitations in the mail, fashion houses that opt with Fashion GPS for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will send email invitations. Guests will be able to receive their invitation via their computer or phone, and RSVP online.
The high-heel clad fashionistas can forgo the long lines and instead check in at airport-style kiosks to receive their seating assignments. The technical upgrades will speed up the guest admittance process and possibly keep gate-crashers at bay.
"For the fashion industry, it's like going from the Stone Age to 2090," said Peter Levy, senior vice president of IMG. Mr. Levy says he is confident the system is prepared to handle the more than 100,000 people expected to attend the event, officially called Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Roughly 80% of the designers showing at Lincoln Center are participating in the new system.

Prabal Gurung is the first to say he's living the American dream...
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week designer Prabal Gurung was a kid from Nepal, who is now dressing our first lady. It’s not a stretch that he is living the American Dream…
Prabal’s collections are admired by top fashion publications, and celebrities are blowing him up with requests for his clothes. However, this didn’t happen overnight…he starting out as an apprentice in India, then flying around the world assisting stylists. Coming to New York all by himself, he enrolled into Parsons The New School for Design. Like most college students in New York City, he also took on various internships, notably at Donna Karran and Cynthia Rowley.
"There is one universal truth: All women, all over the world, want to look beautiful. That is always the theme of my designs."
You’ve got that right. Prabal’s Spring 2011 Collections will be showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Saturday September 11th at 1pm.

Richie Rich managed to score the plum nine o'clock time slot on opening night of New York Fashion Week...
Former Club Kid turned designer Richie Rich, has locked down the 9pm time slot on the opening night of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The theme of his Spring 2011 Collections is S&M meets Gossip Girl-esque debutante ball. "It's about pop culture in general, and my life in New York so far, and my friends. I like a resurgence of naughtiness,” explains Richie Rich.
To go along with the move to Lincoln Center, Richie Rich plans on bringing in some opera fans to diversify his audience. Opera fans, be ready to be “razzle-dazzled.”

Ralph Lauren Chats with Oprah Winfrey for Charity
“She is very special,” Ralph Lauren said on Monday night shortly before taking the stage at Alice Tully Hall to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. “Talking to her about any subject is very interesting. She is energetic and very optimistic, and also very funny, and at the same time, a real pro. It’s going to be very interesting. I don’t know the questions Oprah is going to ask me.”
In a sequel of sorts to their televised tête-à-tête earlier this year, Lauren coaxed the former talk show host back into the interviewer’s chair for the evening, which dually benefited the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention in Harlem and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (to the tune of more than $7 million dollars).

To Wit and Long Memories, Anna Sui
Anna Sui rarely fails to put a smile on your face with her whimsical prints and girly dresses, and her show Wednesday night was no exception. Her soundtrack transformed the big tent at Lincoln Center into a scene from Club Sept in Paris in the 1970s, and the models lined up at the back of the runway as if they were waiting to get in. One by one, they took the catwalk wearing chiffon trousers and tops in dark vintage prints, many of them with matching turbans, or long lace gowns with floppy hats. Her prints were especially witty, one with stripes that, if you looked closely, were made of toothbrushes.

Kristen and Alexandra O’Neill of Porter Grey
Designer Did You Know: Porter Grey
Where did you draw inspiration from for this season’s collection?
For S/S ‘12, we are looking to the 50’s and 60’s. Our grandparents moved into their home in 1950 and starting that May, hosted a garden party that would become an annual event. The occasion came to be timed with the blooming of the azaleas and dogwood trees that form large rounded white and fuchsia islands throughout the back of the house. Two hundred people dressed in perfect garden party ensembles scattered throughout the lawn sipping champagne and southsides under the canopies of giant oak trees.
Where did your label’s name come from?
We named Porter Grey after our great-grandmother.
What will be the must have piece for the Spring 2012 season?
We are loving simple, structured pieces in standout fabrics.
What is the Spring 2012 go-to fabric?
We love perforated leather for spring.
Retro Hairstyles Revamped on the Runway
It’s been a blast from the past backstage at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, as the TRESemmé Stylist Team gives a modern twist to vintage looks.
Tracy Reese’s Spring 2012 collection featured romantic coral, white and blue pieces in lace and silky linens, topped with parasols and straw hats. To complete the look, TRESemmé Lead Stylist Jeanie Syfu made 40s-inspired rolls in the hair using chopsticks, with added texture from the Fresh Start Dry Shampoo.
Our next stop was handbag heaven, also known as Rebecca Minkoff’s showroom, where the designer shared her vision for voluinmous texture for the catwalk a la Diane Keaton in “Manhattan.” The TRESemmé Stylist Team created a corkscrew set using TRESemmé 24-Hour Body Root Boosting Spray and elastic from a fabric store. Backstage transformed into a 1960s salon as models sat under portable dryers for the hair to set. The final result was fluffy waves for Minkoff’s flowing collection, inspired by her recent dessert visit. Pops of color were reflected off the clothes into makeup. The best in beauty is always about finding great looks and giving them your personal touch.

What’s the best part of showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York?
The best part of MBFW is that I'm based in New York. My showroom is located in the heart of Soho with my ateliers in Midtown. Presenting at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York streamlines everything, fully committing our loyalty as a NYC brand and my love of this great city I now call home.
What’s one item you NEVER leave the house without?
My blackberry.
What’s your number one pet peeve?
Being interrupted while watching True Blood. I'm hooked and totally obsessed.
What’s your favorite fashion blog?
The Satorialist. I love seeing what Scott shoots out there on the streets, it’s incredibly inspiring.
What artist/song gets you through Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week?
I have a great remix of the song “Big Jet Plane” by Angus and Julia Stone on my iPod that I’ve been listening to a lot. This song totally plays into my Spring 2012 inspiration of a woman traveling the world for adventure and love, and gets me going as I prepare for my upcoming presentation.

Backstage Beauty: Boy Meets Girl on the Catwalk at Lincoln Center
New York magazine’s fall fashion issue features androgynous model Andrej Pejic on the cover. And the industry’s toeing of the gender line continues inside Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2012. BCBGMAXAZRIA contrasted light and flowing pieces with hair slicked straight back on models. The revamped gel collection by TRESemmé is perfect to achieve this sharp style.
Richard Chai’s collection showcased male and female models in the same cuts and colors, while mixing up traditional looks. Guys sauntered down the runway in pastel-toned cropped pants along with ladies in sneakers and men’s dress shoes. The show highlighted how hair and makeup can transform any look. Soft ponytails and bright lips gave the women a feminine final touch.

Pre-Fall 2012 Part 2/2 featuring Donna Karan, Ports 1961, Narciso Rodriguez & J. Mendel
Ports 1961
"The Ports designer [Fiona Cibani] looked to Victor Vasarely's Optical art for inspiration and worked his pixelated, mosaiclike motifs into her eveningwear in particular. "I kept the silhouette clean"—fitted, with long sleeves and a high neckline—"so the gowns were all about the prints," she explained." - Brittany Adams, Style.com
Narciso Rodriguez
"Take a sleeveless sheath with a brushstroke motif and seamed satin bust line, as if Rothko had whipped up one of his famous canvases on scuba neoprene. Color-blocked ski sweaters teamed with leather and stretch fabric leggings were more everyday in their appeal, but they fit the description Rodriguez gave the collection: He called it a "sporty, painterly crash." - Nicole Phelps, Style.com
J. Mendel
"Where cocktail dressing is concerned, Mendel offered plays on his draped, corseted frocks—some elaborately beaded, in what he suggested would be a preview of Fall '12—and voluminous evening gowns a shade more solid in their silk faille than the delicate mousseline creations he showed last year at this time." - Matthew Shneier, Style.com
Donna Karan
"For Donna Karan, pre-fall means back to work. The tribal mood of Spring was out and menswear-influenced separates were in. The color palette—black, navy, charcoal, and ivory—said business, too, but wide belts at the waist (definitely the season's hot zone so far), along with high slits on skirts and dresses, hinted at after-hours pleasures." - Nicole Phelps

Fashion Week’s Impact, by the Numbers
Since Fashion Week moved from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center a year ago, a lot of people (designers, journalists, locals) have debated the impact of relocating such an enormous media event. While the move has drawn significant complaints from area residents about the noise and pollution caused by the portable generators that power the tents, a new study released on Tuesday noted that the shows have had a positive impact in at least one regard, the local economy.
According to the report, prepared by students at the Fordham University Graduate School of Business at the request of IMG, which produces the event, and the City of New York, the total economic impact on the neighborhood of last season’s shows, held in February, was $20,902,193. (The study focused solely on the Lincoln Center area and the roughly 100 shows held under the aegis of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, not those held in a competing showplace downtown or independently in locales all around the city.)

DKNY PR GIRL's Guide to Surviving Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
1. Set your watch, Blackberry, iPhone, Droid, oven, coffee maker etc to exactly the time Christina Neault, Executive Producer of IMG (who runs the MBFW show schedule at Lincoln Center) has on her watch. I did the work for you, it's now 11:22am EST on Christina's watch.
2. Do carry snacks in your bag. I don't know about you, but when I don't eat at the exact moment I feel a hunger pain, I become a mean girl. Avoid this feeling in the middle of a crazy show day by planning in advance. For me, I like a good chocolate chip Fiber One bar for stamina.
3. Make sure you have extra juice, as in power. Extra charged batteries for whatever device you own is key. Slap that baby on as needed. Don't be shy to also plug in while waiting for your next show. Stealing power is totally legal.

Vera Wang to Enter Men’s Wear
Vera Wang is getting into the men’s formalwear business.
The designer is expected to reveal that she has signed a licensing deal for tuxedos with The Men’s Wearhouse Inc.
The agreement with Men’s Wearhouse also takes the designer into an entirely new market and could be immensely lucrative for the brand. The retailer now holds a dominant position in the tuxedo rental business, offering formalwear in more than 900 stores around the U.S. and tuxedo rentals have become a major contributor to the company’s profits in the past several years.
Getting into the tuxedo rental business has also allowed Men’s Wearhouse to attract a younger shopper to its stores, one that is also driving sales of slimmer-fitting suits and sportswear, two other growth categories for the retailer.

Vera Wang to Leave Garment District
Vera Wang is bidding adieu to the Garment District — but she’s not going too far.
For her new company headquarters, Wang was looking for a space with natural light and an open working environment to house all her divisions, including bridal and ready-to-wear. After a two-year search, the designer and Vera Wang Group president Mario Grauso zeroed in on 40,000 square feet at 15 East 26th Street — with unobstructed views of Madison Square Park.
“I was just looking for space that would accommodate our growing design, management and sales areas,” Wang said. “What appealed to me about the office area was not only the additional square footage but the view as well. Having a nice view and an outdoors feeling is going to be a bonus. It is also a very private and intimate building which feels very appropriate for us.”
“The proximity [to the Garment District] is still pretty close,” Grauso added. “We wouldn’t want to go too far because we do a lot of business with people in this area. It’s within walking distance if someone needs to run for fabric.”

J.Crew Joins the Lineup at Lincoln Center this September
Yesterday, the organizers of this fall's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week sent around a preliminary lineup of designs who will be showing at Lincoln Center this September. The list of designers include DVF, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Kors, along with nine labels that have never before shown at Lincoln Center, and among those is J.Crew.
J.Crew has been on a high-fashion tear recently. The brand is also a partner in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which means they're working with established figures in the industry as well as promoting up-and-comers.

Lacoste Fifth Avenue Flagship Reopens With New Design
Lacoste reopened its expanded Fifth Avenue flagship on Monday after closing it for six months for an extensive redesign and renovation.
The store adds another 1,000 square feet of space by annexing a former jewelry store that was adjacent to its location at 608 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 49th Street.
“We wanted to elevate the brand and create a true flagship,” said Steve Birkhold, chief executive officer of Devanlay US Inc., the apparel and accessories licensee for Lacoste, which also operates the brand’s retail stores in the U.S. “The old design was really just a bigger version of the format we have in our smaller stores and we were not utilizing the space in an efficient way to maximize sales.”
Lacoste has also inked a deal to open another flagship at 541 Broadway, between Prince Street and Spring Street, on Oct. 1.

Cynthia Rowley Reinvents Look Book Resort
Cynthia Rowley Reinvents Look Book Resort
Cynthia Rowley recently teamed up with motion graphic artists Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader of Reed + Rader and debuted their animation lookbook on June 22. The collection, which was inspired by Josh Smith's life-sized dinosaur painting, boasts bold hues like turquoise, fiery red and bright yellow, plus "prehistoric floral prints" with reptile vertebrae amidst the flowers. "The colors [in this work] are just amazing and I love the idea of experimenting with scale," said Rowley, which was evident in the larger-than-life fang necklaces and over-size pillbox clutches.

Pre-Fall 2012: Part 1/2 featuring Carolina Herrera, BCBG Maxazria, Nicole Miller & Naeem Khan
Carolina Herrera
"The twisting and draping motifs from her Spring show reappeared, but the autumnal palette of reds, browns, wheats, and cobalt blue was pure Fall... Hererra knows her loyal customers look to her for smart dresses, coats, and tailored pieces, and she didn't disappoint." - Matthew Shneier, Style.com
BCBGMaxazria
"The dozen or so floaty, colorful frocks that the label showed for pre-fall advanced the ethnic vibe that started to surface in September. Chiffon tunics and pleated skirts were embroidered with Eastern European Bohemian–-inspired patterns, and there was a clear gypsy influence on the scarf-dresses with black lace insets separating panels of blue, chartreuse, and coral chiffon." - Emily Holt, Vogue.com
Nicole Miller
"Nicole Miller is headed West for pre-fall. Specifically, Miller had a gun-slinging Sharon Stone in the 1995 spaghetti western The Quick and the Dead in mind... So Miller really drove the theme home, showing eagle-embroidered stovepipes, sundown-colored tapestry prints, and fringed cotton dresses." - Brittany Adams, Style.com
Naeem Khan
"The mood is classic and the shapes of the garments are too, femininity always at the fore. Great freedom in the choice of colors, from strong shades to more delicate and discreet ones, but always enriched by embroidery and touches of light." - Vogue.it

Sophie walking in the Cynthia Rowley show
Guest Blog: Model Sophie Srej talks about walking in Cynthia Rowley and Diane von Furstenberg
February 10th, 2011
Today is the first day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I had a fitting at Polo Ralph Lauren. The casting manager said, “I like you, let’s put some clothes on you.” So I followed another woman through the Ralph Lauren maze – there were clothes everywhere!
When I was done, I had to go to Carlos Miele and Yigal Azrouel. Every time Yigal sees me he says I look like his niece, exactly like her (or maybe his niece looks like me)! My last thing to do was the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show at Lincoln Center. Andre Leon Talley gave a speech and we started the show, which showed American designers who were nominated for the CFDA award. It was very cool and quick.
February 11, 2011
Today I was in the Cynthia Rowley show where I expected small shoes but they changed them – what a big difference! It was quick and easy. It was at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, so far from my home in the Lower East Side. My dresser was 18 years old – I’m 21. She was so cute. I always listen on fittings so I know how I should be dressed.
Tomorrow I have a Diane von Furstenberg fitting and a Carlos Miele fitting.
February 13, 2011
Today I walked in the Diane von Furstenberg show. The show was at 4PM and we had a full dress rehearsal because they wanted to record the rehearsal too, in 3D. They told us to look into the BIG 3D and smile a little but they were hard to see. What I see on the runway is the people around me, the lights and cameras flashing. I got 2 looks. The first one went fine, I was confident. The second look, the shoe hell broke but nothing happened. I kept going. The finale went fine too. I enjoyed the show so much. I saw Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas and she winked at me.
Then I had a Calvin Klein casting from 9PM which I finished at 12:15AM. It was fun – my friends were around and we talked. I was happy to get a big hug from Francisco and there were big smiles all over because I started with them as an exclusive. Such good memories.
February 14, 2011
Today I did the Carlos Miele show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. In the morning I kept saying “big kiss” to everyone in Portuguese because Carlos is Brazilian and Gisele is my favorite model, so I was in a Brazilian mood.

Gabrielle Union is an actress whose notable roles include the cheerleader opposite Kirsten Dunst in the film Bring it On and Will Smith's love interest in the blockbuster film Bad Boys II. More recently she appeared in the ABC series FlashForward.
I’ve been to a number of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weeks now and what’s exciting to me is that everyone reinvents the wheel each time. It’s also been great to meet my fellow front row attendees like Alexa Chung, who’s a fashion icon.
I really don’t do much to get ready for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I use Spanx! I should say I stop eating but I just rely on Spanx.

From the Front Row: When did you fall in love with fashion?
Wyclef Jean: When I met this one right here (pointing to his stylishly dressed wife, Claudinette)
Jennifer Love Hewitt: When I was seven, after seeing Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Lynn Collins: When I was four years old, my mom was cleaning the house and she saw me come down the stairs more than 30 times, each time in a different outfit. My apartment is a big closet.
Tika Sumpter: In junior high school or high school, I always tried to look at fashion magazines.
Sophia Bush: As a kid, I would sit in my mom's closet on the floor, watching her get dressed. Everything seemed so glamorous and effortless, even when she was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I became enamored with fashion and realized there was an appropriate fashion for every mood and occasion.

Rebecca Minkoff, Baby-G Team Up
MINKOFF’S NEW BABY: Rebecca Minkoff and Baby-G have collaborated on a watch meant to exude a “downtown romantic aesthetic.” This translates to a timepiece combining a black ion-plated stainless steel bracelet and a pink champagne dial. The device is water resistant up to 100 meters and includes an LED light, 48-city world time, five daily alarms, 1/100th second stopwatch, countdown timer and 12/24-hour formats. “My collaboration watch was designed as the watch for the everyday woman that wants both function and fashion,” Minkoff said. “Every woman has a go-to accessory; I designed this Baby-G with this in mind.”
The designer will fete her collaboration Wednesday at New York lounge The Back Room, where the Casio-owned brand will show its advertising spot, “The Morning After,” inspired by the designer’s signature handbag.
Retailing for $200, Minkoff’s Baby-G will be available this month at fine jewelers and at select department stores and boutiques.

As Honorary Spokesperson, Lauren has traveled around the world visiting WFP operations, and helped start the Universities Fighting Hunger Campaign in the US. She has also worked as a model, appearing on the cover of W, Australian Vogue, and Glamour.
As someone involved in the design world it’s inspirational to see what other people are doing. It’s neat to see creativity on display and all these great designers showing their beautiful collections. I don’t really have a plan when I come to the shows; I just sort of show up and see the fashion. I literally came straight from work today, so it’s not a big to-do. I put on a little extra mascara!

Military and Mountains Inspire at General Idea
The letter “M” was the catalyst for General Idea’s Fall 2011 collection. From last season’s military look to the rugged aesthetic of the mountains, “M” inspired us.
General Idea has married those concepts of military and mountains through a collaboration with Italian Outerwear brand 'NEPA'. Together, GI and NEPA have created a line of comfortable yet functional outerwear in rich hues of mustard, red, navy, and beige. Durable fabrications like cotton, wool, and polyester make them ideal for the outdoors.
General Idea has accessorized these pieces with utilitarian backpacks in a variety of colors and styles, cultivating looks that are both practical and on trend.

Designer Did You Know: How do you put a collection together? Where does it start?
Callula Lillibelle: We start with words feelings and images – a cerebral sexy target.
Joy Cioci: The process begins with a source of inspiration that leads to a clearly-defined vision. I am constantly surrounded by inspirational resources, whether it is art, movies, music, friends, culture or the city atmosphere. Once I discover something that evokes me, that creative energy evolves into a focus for inspiration to create my next collection.
Maisonette 1977: Fabric. It always starts with the fabric and the ideas that it inspires. From there, a story usually comes to me and the rest of the collection seems to fill that narrative.
Pamella Roland: Each collection is inspired by an aspect from my travels, life experiences and/or interest in art. My interest is art has flourished since having recently joined the Board of Trustees at the Whitney Art Museum. I can then begin fabric selection, which is most important to this creative process. Once my team and I choose the fabrics, we are able to determine the shapes and details for that season. This is the element that truly illustrates my inspirations and reflects the luxury and fine craftsmanship of the brand.
Porter Grey: We usually start with a few pieces that Alexandra sketches as our inspiration for the collection and then we start to build off of that. This season for example, we knew we wanted to create a collection that infused a preppy, All-American vibe with something rustic and almost Adirondack in nature, so we started to flip through fabric cards to see how we could capture both elements through fabric and design.
Guest Blog: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Pre-Show Casting by Sophie Srej
Model Sophie Srej was discovered while riding a bus in Budapest, Hungary and signed with IMG one year later. She has walked on every major runway in New York, Milan, and Paris including Calvin Klein Collection and BCBGMAXAZRIA. She is currently a contributor for the IMG Models New York blog, in which she shares her experiences during the Fall/Winter 2011 show season.
Even though I arrived in New York on February 2nd after two weeks in Japan, castings for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week have started waaaaay before. Since I arrived I have been running up and down the city….I don’t even use a subway map anymore. Except when I am heading to Soho: Greene, Wooster, Mott, Elizabeth?!?
Models castings aren’t all glamorous: they can be SOOO LOONG. However, they can also be fun, easy and fast. When I am writing this I just arrived for a BCBG casting with casting director Russell Marsh. There are 300-400 girls here and I am number 147. This can be classified as one of the LONG castings….you have to wait two hours when the casting itself only takes 10 minutes! It is hard not to get nervous and worried, especially when the casting runs late and casting directors are calling because you’re missing other castings! The good news is we received goodie bags with makeup, water and snacks…
For Calvin Klein castings with the infamous Maida and Rami, our books are collected right away so there is no way to check-in and run to another casting. We are very lucky to be the chosen few selected to meet with the stylist and the designer. I'm so relieved when I see my friends at castings, like Samantha Gradoville ,Jac Monika or Barbara Palvin. When it’s time for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week I realize how many millions of models exist on earth and that I'm lucky I'm doing the biggest shows.
So to get book for a show, you need to do castings, callbacks and fittings. Then repeat!
NYC High School Students Learn Ins and Outs of Fashion Industry from Panel of Fashion Heavyweights

Panel members included Patrick Robinson, Executive Vice President of Global Design for the Gap; Lubov Azria, Chief Creative Officer of BCBG Max Azria Group; Lori Goldstein, Stylist; and Terron Schaefer, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer for Saks Fifth Avenue. DVF’s Literary Launch in China
Citic Press of China has just released the Chinese edition of Diane von Furstenberg’s autobiography “A Signature Life.”
The same publisher released the Chinese edition of “Steve Jobs” a month ago. “We are trying to introduce the Chinese public to stories of great creative talents,” said Citic Press’ publisher, Pan Yue.
Diane herself made a grand appearance in Beijing at a press conference last week to help promote the book, which went on sale last week both online and off-line in China. DVF the brand has already opened three stores in both Beijing and Shanghai, and more stores are in the pipeline for 2012.
It is obvious that Diane’s reputation, and that of her wrap dress, precedes her. Yang Lan, an anchorwoman known as the “Chinese Barbara Walters,” came to the press conference and said that she already owns several wrap dresses. “It’s easy to wear and very flattering to the Chinese body,” she said. “I bought several, and thought, ‘I like this designer, she knows what we want.’?” She invited Diane to be her guest on the popular talk show, “Woman in the World.”
So far, the book is doing well in retail; dangdang.com, the major online bookseller in China, reported that the book is already sold out, and it has requested more copies from the publisher.

Fashion + Music Collaboration: Tess Giberson's Fall 2011 “Collage”
We are excited to work with Panda Bear to make the music for the Fall show. Panda Bear is Noah Lennox of Animal Collective who we met through mutual friends and asked to contribute music for the presentation. It's a beautifully mixed collection of songs from the upcoming album "Tomboy" which I was listening to from the evolution of "Collage." The feeling of his songs are both melancholic and optimistic. There is a feeling of a lucid dream, and then the beats come in, and you feel as if you are on a journey, moving forward to somewhere else. It is beautiful and melancholic at the same time…
I’m also collaborating with jewelry designer Ninh Wysocan (friend and fellow RISD alum). Ninh has a strong aesthetic and vision in accessory design, and we have collaborated for years on various collections and projects. Her work is unique and personal, and I love the details! To be shown alongside the garments in my FW11 collection, we’ve selected pieces from Ninh’s new season, which were inspired by her recent trip to Morocco and traditional jewelry of the nomadic Tuareg tribes. They invoke an ancient mythic quality while being completely modern in their interpretation. For example, she interpreted the "hand of Fatima" as a five pointed diamond shape. Her pieces create a sort of collage of their own– perfectly referencing and complementing the idea of the Fall collection– layering metal and other materials, weight and proportion, and a balance between the geometric and organic.

"18 days til showtime; anything can happen, and it probably will..."—Yoana Baraschi
Designer Yoana Baraschi is busy preparing for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. When we asked her to share a few trends and inspirations for her Fall 2011 Collection, she described the collection as "a mix of heroine in Virtualand aesthetic with a strong dose of 70’s excess femme fatale. Amplified faux real skins, hypercolor stricken with black. 3D effects of corsetry, bold stripes and of course- faux fur; lots of it."
She also shared an insider peak into the daily life of a busy fashion designer:
”We are currently waiting for our first delivery of shoes and bags ever! They will be striped and color blocked. We are also hoping our cage dress, which takes 50 hours to make, will make it in time. We have our first styling meeting with our darling, Katie Mossman on Thursday, and are hoping it makes it here!
We are also seriously talking to our key make-up artist about how many eye shadow colors we can use. All while sending Laurent, our fabulous music master some special songs to include in our show.”—Yoana Baraschi

Tommy Hilfiger is the Master of Reinvention...
Tommy Hilfiger knows a thing or two about reinvention. He started his business when he was just 18 years old selling jeans. When he found he couldn’t find what he wanted, he started designing and customizing his own denim. Twenty-five years later his business has come a long way since his first store in New York selling clothing, posters and incense.
“I started Tommy Hilfiger based on what I wanted to wear …and I decided to redefine the classics.” Hilfiger said. When Hilfiger was trying to figure out how to revive his line, he asked Karl Lagerfeld about his success with Chanel. Lagerfeld told him that he revisited Chanel archives and modernized them. “As simple as it sounds, that’s exactly what we did,” Tommy said.
In addition to his exclusive agreement with Macy’s, Hilfiger now has 1,000 of his own stores around the world.

"I have wanted forever to be able to have a window to the world," commented Yeohlee Teng on her first store.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week designer Yeohlee Teng has opened her first store, located at 25 West 38th Street. “The best part is the realization of a dream. I have wanted forever to be able to have a window to the world and to be able to create a real environment for what I do — for selling, buying, shipping, branding. This is a real opportunity but it is also contextual,” Teng said. Friends and fans showed up in support for her opening, including fellow designers Nanette Lepore and Anna Sui.
The space will be her design studio and store. Commenting on the first store she said,“How can we evolve the discussion for the 21st century? I thought about doing something that would encompass a store, design space, showroom and shipping. It’s what we should be,” she said. “Every person should know where the clothes they buy are made. You know how localized food is popular? Localized clothes should be too.”

Designer Exclusive: Inspiration for Mackage's Spring 2011 Collection...
Designers Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy explore femininty’s many dimensions to create a collection at once bold and commanding, yet soft and romantic. Structured silhouettes recall fashion’s utilitarian appeal in the form of a fitted blouse topped with exaggerated, armor- inspired shoulders. Leather sheathes the body in every combination, from jacket to short, skirt to pant. Animal-inspired prints march across the close-fitting dresses with intricate necklines reminiscent of tribal jewelry.
Structural edge is softened by a romantic blend of sumptuous fabrics and delicate details, which give a touch of elegance to an otherwise powerful shape. Bold lines are softened by a sensual palette of fresh whites, blush tones and luminescent peaches. A wash of studding plays off of delicate chiffon and satin trim. Together these elements pay homage to the modern woman – a resilient force of unmistakable grace.

American Express Skybox Moment: Christian Siriano
If Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week produced their own fashion yearbook at the end of the week, there's no doubt that ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee would sweep multiple categories - "Most Popular Male" "Best-Dressed" and perhaps even "Class Clown". A few months ago, a viral video of Joe made its way around the web of him sashaying around New York in high heat wearing a faux fur Chanel men's suit as he visited surprised onlookers at Starbucks, Central Park and more. It's refreshing that a popular fashion editor doesn't take himself, nor the industry, too seriously and American Express Cardmembers got to experience this firsthand at Lincoln Center.
Joe stopped by the American Express Skybox after the Prabal Gurung show to meet and greet Cardmembers, who gleefully asked fashion and celeb-related questions before posing for photos with the star editor. Zee proudly pointed out that Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe was one of four young women chosen to be on the October cover of ELLE, which celebrates the mag’s 25th anniversary. "We don't celebrate people on our cover because they are thin," he pointed out. "We celebrate them because they are accomplished." The other three cover girls are Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried and Lauren Conrad—each creating their own brand in a distinctly unique way.
Like many editor-personalities, Zee has also started to tip toe his way into reality television, having already appeared on "Stylista" and the still ongoing "The City". But now, he's ready to roll full steam ahead with his very own show—he proudly informed Cardmembers to tune in to the Sundance Channel later this year to catch "All On The Line", which has Zee mentoring new up-and-coming designers each episode. "I'm going to be giving them some tough love," he hinted.
One of the chic and stylish American Express Cardmembers wanted to know what the editor did for the big night during Friday's buzzing Fashion's Night Out. "I was in Brooklyn filming my new show until 11 pm," he laughed. "I have too many friends and I wouldn't have had time to visit all their events in time." He divulged to everyone that he was secretly glad, since it gave him a fabulous, legitimate excuse to slip out on all the fashionable madness.
